While most people correlate free agency with the mass onslaught of notifications hitting their phone starting the evening of June 30th, the first phase of free agency starts the day after the NBA Finals end. This is the day teams can start negotiations with upcoming free agents currently on their roster. This is the time that sets up how the rest of free agency needs to play out.
Once June 30th at 6 PM EST hits, you can start negotiations with free agents outside of your organization. You are able to offer contracts and trade players, but you can officially sign players starting July 6th at 12:01 PM EST. Many desirable free agents already find a destination before then though.
Before heading through all of the destinations of the free agents who have agreed to deals so far, it is important to recognize the two kinds of free agents; restrictive and unrestrictive.
A restricted free agent can pursue and receive offers, the team they were on has the ability to match the offer and the player must return to that team. If the player is an unrestricted free agent, they are able to sign with any team they want and have no obligation to return to their previous team, no matter what deal is offered.
From the day after the finals ended on June 17th until the 30th at 6 PM, it is the period where teams can have discussions with free agents previously on their roster. So this is how it all rolled out:
